5 Ways Work-at-Home Moms Can Boost Productivity


Working from home is great – until you get distracted by that pile of laundry on the table and the dishes in the sink. Knowing that you don’t have to compete with co-workers in productivity or have your boss pop in at any moment can also put the brakes on your productivity.

If you need to get more done at the home office, these five tips can help.

1. Start Early

The early bird gets the worm – and the most work done. Try getting started early in the morning and before normal working hours. There are fewer distractions when the rest of the world is still sleeping.

Some work-at-home moms find that they’re most productive if they can start their day around 4-5 am. If you’re watching the kids and working, getting an extra-early start can also mean getting in a few solid hours of uninterrupted work.

2. Dress the Part

No shoes, no shirt, no pants – no problem. When you work from home, attire is optional. But if you want to maximize productivity, dress the part.

Get up and get dressed just as you would if you were going to an actual office. Formal, professional attire will help shift your mindset and get you ready to take on the day.

If you don’t own a professional wardrobe, at least wear clothes that aren’t your pajamas. It’s easy to jump back into bed and put off the work day if you never get dressed.

3. Choose Your Work Space Wisely

Your environment also affects your productivity. If you have loud neighbors or a constant itch to clean the house, it may be best to work outside of the home. Local coffee shops and other WiFi-enabled shops are great places to work. The noise and chatter may just help you stay on track.

If leaving the house isn’t an option, make it a point to create a dedicated workspace in your home. It could be a specific desk and chair, or it can be an entire room with good lighting and windows. Having that dedicated space for work will help switch your mindset when you sit down to get started.

4. Enhance Your Focus

Coffee is the “drug” of choice for many work-at-home moms, but there are other ways to naturally boost your focus and concentration.

A good place to start is with your diet. Food can either give you a mental (and physical) energy boost, or it can have you crawling back into bed for a mid-morning snooze.

Some moms find that a high-protein or light breakfast helps them avoid that mid-morning crash. High-carb meals, like oatmeal, can trigger a quick blood sugar spike and a crash shortly after.

Other foods that can boost your focus include:
