Barbie's Hubby Ken Will Now Be Available in Dad Bod

Though Barbie‘s occupations have varied wildly throughout the years—she’s been an astronaut, paratrooper and President in her lifetime—what’s been most notable to us are the changes to the figurine itself. Just last year her creators, Mattel, released three new body types for the doll in petite, tall and curvy (as well as new skin tones, eye colors and hair colors), thus acknowledging, in a body-positive way, that there are other shapes out there that need representation, aside from Barbie’s original, iconic and yet completely unattainable figure. Well, it looks like the toy manufacturer isn’t going to stop with just Barbie. Today, Mattel announced they’re going to expand Ken body types, too, and get this: one of them is going to get a dad bod.

According to a press release from the toy manufacturer, they’ll be expanding the Fashionistas line of Barbie dolls with 15 new and diverse Ken dolls in three body types—slim, broad (aka dad bod) and original. The Ken dolls will also come in seven skin tones, eight hair colors, nine hairstyles and trendy fashions, from casual business attire to athletic wear.

“By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation,” says Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Barbie in a press release. “Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world.”

We’re all for making toys more body positive, even the ones representing men. There’s more than one body type for men and women, and it’s about time toy manufacturers realize that.
