Tech Trends in Security for 2018

As the new year begins, it’s important to look ahead at the goals you have for your business in the coming year. It’s equally important to look back at the milestones you hit the past year, and take stock of anything that can be improved. One thing to consider, that can often be overlooked, is your company’s safety and security.

As a small, home-based business, it is easy to get tied up in the day to day of managing and growing the company. You wear multiple hats and often times, this means you aren’t able to be stay on top of everything! That’s why we want to remind you about the latest trends in technology, especially when it comes to your business or home’s safety. Dennis McTighe, VP of the Americas at Swann, the leader in DIY home security for the last 30 years, share his thoughts on the top three trends that will most affect you!

  • Wireless, Rechargeable Systems: While a wired system is still going to offer the most reliability, there is a definite push toward wireless devices when it comes to home and office security. The convenience and ease of installation that a wireless system offers can not be beat. Multiple cameras can be placed indoor or outdoor around you home and/or office and synced to a surveillance app on your phone. You can receive push notifications to alert you when something might be amiss and you can view the video footage right from your phone, wherever you are. You can also use the camera for weeks at time without worrying about charging it, and it can be easily charged via USB. This is great for a busy professional on the go or for someone who may want to expand or move offices as the company grows, and can easily take their security system with them!
  • Home Integration: Nowadays, it’s all about what your security product works with in terms of other technology in the home or in a business. As people make a purchase decision to go with a certain platform, like an Amazon Echo or a Google Home, they want to make sure that the other devices they bring into their home or business work with that platform. It’s become really important for security companies to make sure their latest products are able to integrate with as many of these platforms as possible. Moreover, being able to view your security cameras and interact with your security system using voice commands adds a layer of convenience for every day users as well. These are things we are working on achieving at Swann, and a trend to look out for in the coming year.

  • Home Security in UHD: The days of low resolution, murky surveillance video are a thing of the past. In 2018, 4K ultra HD video quality will become widely available for homes and businesses. 4K video quality will allow end-users to see facial detail, license plates, clothing colors and a level of detail previously only available in high tech, high cost systems well out of reach of everyday consumers. The other advantage of ultra HD is the zoomability, with users able to zoom-in to see close-ups both in live mode and on recorded footage. Now you can really see what’s happening!

If you don’t already have a security system in place to keep your home office safe, we suggest you consider the added value and peace of mind you will get from having your business, belongings, and loved ones protected by the latest technology.
