These 14 New Barbies Are the Role Models We Need Right Now

The Barbie brand has reinvented itself quite often in the past few years. In 2016, the brand launched a body positivity campaign, complete with dolls in all shapes and sizes. And just last year, we even got a “hipster” Ken with a man bun. But this latest collection might be the coolest dolls Barbie has done so far!
Today, in advance of International Women’s Day on March 8, Barbie honors 14 modern-day role models who have broken boundaries in their fields and have inspired girls everywhere by giving them the Barbie treatment—a one-of-a-kind doll in their likeness.
These new dolls will be a part of the brand’s Shero program, which has honored women who have made a difference since 2015. This year’s batch includes Chloe Kim, a first generation Asian-American who, at 17, was the youngest woman to win a gold medal in snowboarding at the 2018 winter games, Patty Jenkins, the American filmmaker behind Wonder Woman who broke the record for Biggest Grossing Live-Action Film Directed by a Woman, domestically and internationally, and Nicola Adams, a two-time gold medalist and the U.K.’s most successful female boxer of all time.
Other role models getting the Barbie treatment include champion windsurfer Çağla Kubat from Turkey, world-renowned chef Hélène Darroze from France, volleyball champ Hui Ruoqi from China, professional golfer Lorena Ochoa from Mexico and journalist Martyna Wojciechowska from Poland.
The brand is also honoring three historical role models, who will be added to the Inspiring Women collection: aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, artist Frida Kahlo and mathematician Katherine Johnson, whose story was told in the film Hidden Figures. The dolls are all available for preorder on the site now.
As part of the campaign, Mattel is asking fans to share who inspires them by using the hashtag #MoreRoleModels on social media. We for one are happy to see all these amazing women being recognized for their hard work and cultural significance.
