Every mom has a few guilty pleasures. You work so hard around the clock at home and in the office, that sometimes, you need fun and excitement in your life. It doesn’t take much either to make you smile. A little retail therapy here or a glass of wine there isn’t hurting anyone, if anything, it helps you keep your sanity. Though there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself sometimes, you must be careful not to get hooked. As too much of anything can end up being bad for you and those you love.
Binge Watching TV
When you’re not busy meeting the demands of your routine, your television is invaded by cartoons, reality shows, and whatever else your kids watch these days. The time to catch up on your daytime talk shows, late night dramas, and weekday series doesn’t seem to happen often. So, when it does, it can get pretty tempting to curl up on the couch and watch hours of adult tv.
There’s certainly nothing wrong with catching up on the last few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy or The View, but too much screen time is bad for your health. Sitting for long hours leads to eye strain, back and neck aches, weight gain, and an increased chance for problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. Try to keep your screen time to a minimum of 1-2 hours per day.
Wine or Alcoholic Beverages
Who doesn’t like the idea of sipping on a glass of wine while they read a good book, watch a good show, or listen to some great music? There are even studies that suggest red wine could be great for the heart. So, why not indulge on occasion?
Drinking a glass of wine per day won’t harm your body at all. However, when you drink more than the recommended amount, start drinking as a way to relieve stress or mask emotions, or you begin drinking because you feel like you need it, this can lead to addiction. If you’ve reached this point perhaps you can visit a rehab to get clean.
How many women love a cup of coffee to get them through the day? A fresh cup of Joe can make you feel like a new woman in a matter of minutes. Sure, drinking coffee on occasion won’t do any harm to you, but consuming too much caffeine is never a good idea for your body. Too much caffeine can lead to anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, high blood pressure, muscle breakdown, addiction, and more.
If you need your cup of coffee in the mornings, then have just one cup. However, if you’re drinking more than you should and want to ditch it altogether, look for alternatives to combat your cravings. Consider trying chamomile or peppermint tea.
Everybody is hooked on something that makes them feel good. While it’s okay to make yourself smile on occasion, you have to keep your physical and mental well-being at the front of your mind. If you’re noticing signs that you’re hooked on things that are not healthy for you, either reduce the activities, find alternatives, or get help.
