Virtual Part-Time Jobs for Busy Stay-at-Home Moms

Virtual Part-Time Jobs for Busy Stay-at-Home MomsBy Holly Reisem Hanna

When I began looking for work-at-home jobs, I had no clue what I wanted to do, I just knew that I needed something part-time and flexible. My plan was to work in the afternoons when my daughter was napping, which gave me two-three hours of uninterrupted work time. Luckily, through my networking efforts, I was able to land a freelance marketing gig that allowed me to work a few hours each day while my daughter snoozed in the afternoons.

If you have a newborn or toddlers running around the house here are some virtual part-time jobs that will allow you to work from home around your kid’s schedule.

1. Administrative Work

If you have prior administrative experience or you simply enjoy basic office tasks like typing, correspondence, and scheduling, a virtual assistant (VA) job may be the perfect fit for you. Not only are VAs are in demand, but their hours are (often) flexible, and most tasks you can complete on a flexible timeline. You can learn more about virtual assistant roles here.

Here are a couple of places to find flexible VA positions:

2. Closed Captioner

Closed captioners add captions or subtitles to live and pre-recorded audio. They transcribe the words as spoken. To become a closed captioner you must be able to type fast and accurately. (Many captioners clock in at 200 wpm!) Those with stenography experience (such as court reporters and those who work in medical dictation) may want to explore this work-at-home role.

3. Creative Work

Moms with a creative flair (and experience) should check out the many image and photo editing positions available for part-time workers. Many companies seek part-time graphic designers and editors for ongoing and one-time jobs. If you are familiar with software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and have a trained eye, check out these great opportunities:

4. ESL Classes

Teaching ESL classes is a great way to put your language skills to use! English majors, certified TEFL and TESOL instructors and those with teaching experience are perfect for the position. ESL classes are even pre-recorded from time-to-time and student interactions are handled virtually on your own schedule.

Here are a couple of places to look for ESL teaching positions:

5. Phone Work

Do you have the gift of gab? If you’re comfortable on the phone you could find positions in sales, customer service, travel, and reservations. Many excellent companies outsource their phone positions to virtual, part-time employees.

6. Proofreading

Proofreading is another great part-time opportunity. With the amount of online content out there, good proofreaders are in high demand. Proofreading differs from editing, in that proofreaders are simply checking for errors and editors are examining content and structure as well. If you have a good eye for mistakes and grammatical errors, you can earn good money from home proofreading.

Here are a couple of places to get you started:

7. Online Stylist

Fashionistas and those with a great eye for style may love work as an online stylist. Clothing box subscribers fill out online questionnaires and even share their social media profiles with their stylists who curate the perfect new pieces for their wardrobe. You’ll assess customer’s preferences and create a monthly selection of new outfits for them to try on and buy. For an in-depth review of Stitch Fix, be sure to check out my YouTube video below.

8. Search Engine Evaluator

There are many types of online work, but Search Engine Evaluators specifically complete internet research tasks to evaluate if search results are relevant and useful. These jobs can be done 100 percent online and offer flexible scheduling.

9. Social Media

Are you a social media expert? Do you have experience marketing and selling? There are many jobs available in social media marketing. Companies know social media engagement is so vital to growing their business, but many simply don’t have the employee bandwidth to handle their social media marketing in-house. It’s a perfect opportunity for part-time work at home.

10. Website Testing

You don’t need to know HTML or programming to work part-time testing websites. Website testing services are looking for visitors to relay their experience and suggest improvements. They’re looking for people who are similar to their customers and readers, making this a great job for almost anyone wanting to work from home. Typically, testers record their impressions as they visit and evaluate a website.
