What I Learned From Watching My Parents Raise My Prodigy Athlete Brother

Being raised with a brother who was considered one of the best athletes coming out of our city ever could not have been more exciting. Being the sister of the star athlete has its own perks as well but more than anything the way my parents raised us taught me quite a lot. The lessons can be used for nearly any parent regardless if their child is the next Mozart or Michael Jordan. The support system that it takes to raise a family already takes a lot but this multiplies with a great athlete. The following are lessons that were learned from watching my parents raise my prodigy athlete brother.

Everyone Plays a Role in Success and Failure

Everyone had a role in our family when it came to my brother’s playing career. My job as the sister was to help him relax before a game by starting a random conversation. This continued well into his college sports career where he would call me a few hours before a game to get his mind off of things. My father was willing to get up at any hour for any practice regardless of where it was. All my brother had to do was tell him and he would get up sometimes at 4am to drive my brother who was incredibly self-disciplined. My mother took care of all of the bumps and bruises my brother frequently had due to the rough sports he excelled in.

Eating Like An Elite Athlete is Expensive!

The nutrition that an elite athlete needs on a daily basis cannot be from processed foods or junk foods. Natural foods that were not pumped full of hormones were what my brother ate but it got extremely expensive. Buying directly from farms turned into our strategy for this as we could buy in bulk and my brother took comfort in knowing where the food came from. A lesson that can be taken from this is that for an athlete to perform at their highest level they have to be using the best fuel possible. Now there are other options instead of eating a few pounds of chicken per day like that of nutritional supplements like amino acids and protein shakes.

Some Parents Are Insane

My brother was extremely self-motivated so he pushed himself in his athletics and we were all there to support him. Watching other parents at the high school level and the way they would berate their teens after a bad game was appalling. This made my brother and I appreciate our parents with their relaxed supportive nature. A lesson this can teach is not to engage with these parents as they can become violent or verbally abusive. Any mother who has sat through a little league season knows exactly what this means.

The environment of support that many family’s lack was made stronger through one member excelling in sports. Not all families are like this as jealousy can creep into the mix quite quickly. Anyone who is raising a great athlete keep these lessons in mind as they might be able to help you in the near future!
