What You Need To Look Out For In Yourself and Your Teen

[ad_1]

As a mother it can be difficult for us when our children get to a certain age. There are some teens who simply rebel a bit but still can be extremely nice to parents when it is not in the middle of a fight. Other teens separate themselves from their parents almost completely as they feel that their parents do not understand them or what they are going through. A teen’s lack of need for their mother can make us quite upset as we felt like we would always have a place taking care of them. The following are what you need to look out for in your teen as well as yourself.

Turning To Substances To Fill The Time

Alcohol and drugs are what many mothers turn to simply to fill the time when their children get older or leave the home. If you find yourself constantly drinking or using other substances you need to seek professional help. Addictions worsen and in some cases people are too far gone before they decide to look for help. Professionals can help get to the root of these problems. Finding new hobbies can also help fill the time as substance abuse is never the answer.

Finding Your Relationship Falling Apart

Kids can bring two people together and give them something to bond over. Once the children are out of the house there are plenty of couples who find that they have nothing left in common. For this reason it is important to constantly work on your relationship while the children are in the home. When there is trouble going to therapy is the best option as there can be things done and said that might not be able to be forgiven. Make a point of working on your relationship daily even if it is something small like telling each other what you love about the other daily.

Teenagers Going Down The Wrong Path

Teens can make the wrong friends and things can go wrong quite quickly. It only takes one drug arrest to impact the rest of your teen’s life. While you teen does deserve some privacy it is important to keep an eye for signs of drug abuse. Significant others of your teen can also cause a problem as they can lead them to change their goals due to them being in “love”. Do not ban your teen from seeing this person as the relationship will likely run its course. Banning them from seeing this person can lead to them running off with them or trying to keep them in their life by having a baby. In cases of abuse there needs to be legal action taken to protect your teen as this is still your job.

Signs Of Depression in Yourself or Teen

The teenage years are hard for everyone as a mother feels like their baby is long gone. This can lead to depression as you feel that you are not needed anymore since your teen does not have to rely on you as much anymore. If you feel like you have depressive symptoms you need to get checked out before you turn to substance abuse or harm relationships with ones you love. On the same note teens can get depressed as getting older is simply harder and changes in their bodies can make things confusing. Keep an eye out for your teen as well as they could lose interest in things they once loved as withdraw from friends. Depression has a lot of signs so it is important to watch out for yourself as well as your teen.
