Why Being a Work-at-Home Mom is the Best of Both Worlds

Why Being a Work-at-Home Mom is the Best of Both WorldsBy Holly Reisem Hanna

From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a mom. In fact, every year in my School Days Keepsake Album, it would ask the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” And while I had no clue what I wanted to do professionally, I did know that I wanted to be a mom.

As I got older and thought more about becoming a parent, I knew that I wanted to be my child’s primary caregiver. Maybe it was because my mom had stayed at home with my siblings and me. Or maybe it was the fact that I didn’t like working as a nurse. Whatever the case when I got pregnant, I started planning for my transition out of the workforce.

During my last nine months working as a nurse, I saved as much money as I could so that we wouldn’t feel the financial loss. But my savings dwindled much quicker than I had anticipated. Having been a parent for nine months, I knew there was no way I could put my daughter in daycare; it would have broken my heart. So I started looking for work-at-home jobs.

After searching for a few months, I secured a part-time, freelance, marketing position which gave me a steady paycheck and the idea for this website. I worked approximately 10 to 15 hours a week while my daughter napped; it was perfect. I had money coming in, and I was able to witness all of my little girl’s special milestones.

When my daughter was three, I unexpectedly found myself pregnant. At the time, we were uncertain if we wanted to have a second child, due to complications I endured during the labor and delivery with my daughter. But after the initial shock wore off, we were thrilled, to say the least. At our eight week visit, we saw the baby’s heartbeat and started talking about baby names. However, this story does not end well. At our 12-week checkup appointment, the doctor informed us the fetus was no longer viable; I had experienced a missed miscarriage. I was devastated.

I waited two weeks for nature to take its course, but I ended up needing a D&C. After the procedure, we were told we could start trying again after my cycle returned. Sadly, it never returned. After numerous diagnostic tests, it was determined I had Asherman’s Syndrome (uterine adhesions). Soon after the diagnosis, I had a surgery to remove the scar tissue. Six weeks later we were given the green light to start trying again; that was five years ago. Today we are parents to an only child.

Being a parent to an only child is one reason why working from home has been so significant in my life. I’ve been able to experience every single moment with this amazing little human. I’ve been there to hear her words of wisdom, and witness her empathetic, caring, and generous nature. I’ve seen her grow from an inquisitive toddler into a wise young girl who makes me laugh and love more each day. I’m so grateful that I got to spend all of this precious time with my her, as I’ll never get to experience those little things a second time around.

While my daughter was the catalyst for my work-at-home endeavors, the inspiration behind a flexible work environment came from an equally amazing person, my mom. As I mentioned at the beginning, my mom was a stay-at-home mom to three kids, but not only that, she also made money by watching other people’s children. For approximately six years, my mom earned income from home in this manner.

Once my youngest sibling went off to school full-time, my mom decided to work at a nearby elementary school where she was able to work around her children’s school schedules. She was there for us when we got home from school, and she was available to us during holidays and summer vacation. She helped us with projects, drove us to play-dates, and volunteered at school. I know that my mom’s constant presence in our lives positively impacted us in more ways than we can even comprehend.
