Worried How Kids Would React to His New Glasses, Little Boy Gets Best Surprise from Teachers

Although wearing glasses is a pretty neutral or stylish option when you’re an adult, when you’re a kid, it can make you the subject of some merciless teasing by your peers—because we all know from our own childhood that kids don’t always take kindly to people who look different.

Worried that he would be taunted for stepping out in specs for the first time, one little New Jersey boy and his working mom were in for a big shock. When 5-year-old Blake went into his nursery school on March 23 for the first time wearing glasses, he was surprised to see that he wasn’t the only one. His whole class was wearing glasses like he was!

Aww!

Blake’s mom, Jessica Goldman, marketing director of Working Mother Media, found out that same day, receiving photos of the sweet sight via text from her sister, whose son is in the same class as Blake, and from one of Blake’s teachers.

Jessica tells Working Mother, “Blake was feeling anxiety about coming to school with his new glasses and had said to me, ‘What if my friends laugh at me when I get to school with my glasses?'” so she shared her concerns with Blake’s teachers Rochelle Nash and Jodi Kwasnik and director Hilarie Kay from the Glen Rock Jewish Center Nursery school in Glen Rock, NJ. On Wednesday, she says the class read a couple stories with the main characters getting or wearing glasses and watched a movie about a character getting glasses. According to a weekly newsletter, the teachers also had the class play some fun sight games like “I Spy” and “Follow the Leader” and learn about Arthur, the cartoon aardvark, and the first time he got his signature glasses.

However, Jessica had no idea the teachers would take it even further the next day.

“What Rochelle and his other teacher Jodi planned so far exceeded my expectations and just blew me away. When Thursday came and Blake arrived to school for the first time wearing his glasses, his whole class was also wearing glasses in support! It just warmed my heart and was overwhelming.” She also says that the story reminds her how amazing and good people are out there. “Rochelle and Jodi weren’t asked to do this—they just came up with the idea knowing one of their students was having some anxiety and they wanted to make him comfortable. What could have been a very stressful day and week was immediately turned into an unbelievably fun and special one. It just made me so happy and grateful that there are genuinely selfless and thoughtful people in this world who are willing to do something like that for your child.”
